DIY Dog Grooming, From Puppy Cuts to Best in Show

Book Review: DIY Dog Grooming, From Puppy Cuts to Best in Show by Jorge Bendersky

DIY Dog Grooming, From Puppy Cuts to Best in Show

Jorge Bendersky’s book is informative, fun, and has helped me become an even better pet owner!

I’ve always been a dog lover and I tend to spend most of my days with my four-legged friends! I have a 4 year old black lab named Harley, who I absolutely adore. In addition, I walk several dogs as a part-time job, and in my spare time I also volunteer at an animal shelter. I love animals and I’m continuously striving to learn more about dogs, their behavior, and
how to properly care for them.

Over the years, I have followed celebrity dog groomer, Jorge Bendersky on the internet and viewed his various TV segments. His work intrigues me and he is very knowledgable in the dog grooming field. He always shares wonderful tips and advice on how to bring out the full potential in your dog. When I heard about his new book, “DIY Dog Grooming, From Puppy Cuts to Best in Show,” I purchased my copy right away. I’m so happy I did. This book is a MUST HAVE for ALL pet owners!

Throughout the book, Bendersky brings to light the importance of dog grooming. It’s important for us to understand that grooming helps to maintain health and could potentially detect health problems too. The details and photos in this book are very informative and helpful in explaining the grooming process. I work with various dogs on a daily basis; however, this book clearly explains how to go above and beyond to care for all types of dogs regardless of breed, age, or temperament.

After reading this, I found myself informing others about what I have learned. I gave advice to friend and family members who are pet owners. I also shared helpful tips to those working/volunteering at the shelter, and I preached the importance of grooming to my dog walking clients. Of course, I recommended Bendersky’s book to everyone!

This book also reminds pet owners that grooming can bring you and your pooch together. Who wouldn’t want that? It has motivated me to provide even better care to all the pets in my life and spread the word to others, too! Jorge Bendersky’s book gets two thumbs up from me and my furry friends!

Puppy Bowl X - New York

Puppy Bowl X

Puppy Bowl X - New York

It’s that time of the year! The Puppy Bowl, in its tenth year, will air Feb. 2  at 3pm EST right before the big game on the Animal Planet. Puppy Bowl X will be held in Times Square prior to the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos battling it out in East Rutherford, NJ in Super Bowl XLVIII.

The first Puppy Bowl aired in 2005, with only footages of wandering dogs with no commentary and no sponsor ads decorating the stadium with viewership of more than 5.6 million. Ten years later, 12 million people watch this special event. By 2012, Geico brought the naming rights to the stadium and this year they will be introducing a VIP suite, sponsored by Sheba cat food, where cats will hang out.

The starting line up consist of 38 shelter puppies. Here are some great photos about the journey to the Puppy Bowl. While one of the Puppy Bowl’s goals is to find homes for rescue dogs, most of this year’s competitors already have a family of their own.

Children's book on animals and life

Review of “The Gift of the Ladybug” by Carole Amber

The Gift of the Ladybug

I read “The Gift of the Ladybug” and instantly fell in love with this
children’s book. This story brings peace, comfort and inspiration for
families who have a child with a life threatening illness. The story was
created after Carole Amber found out her son, TJ, would not see his second
birthday. Carole does an amazing job expressing her pain and heartbreak
after learning her son was different and would soon be set free to fly.

In the book, Polkadot, the ladybug is happy being a ladybug and he accepts
himself for exactly who he is. He realizes he will never be a horse like
his parents and he only knows how to live a short sweet life. The message
of this book is of acceptance and is a true inspiration for those dealing
with an ill child, or for anyone who feels different. This children’s book
is simply written with amazing artwork, and can be a great comfort for
kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one too.

Just last night, I found out a friend of a friend’s daughter lost her
battle to cancer. I’m planning on passing this story along to baby Elena’s
family, in the hope it will help put their tragic situation in a different
perspective and will allow them to find some peace.

This book is an easy read, with beautiful, vibrant illustrations that will
touch your heart deeply. I highly recommend this book, not only for those
who are grieving the loss of a precious ladybug; but for all children, so
they too learn about acceptance and feeling perfect just the way they are.

CFO Dog Luggage Tag Review

Chief Furry Officer – Custom Photo Square Luggage Tag

CFO Dog Luggage Tag Review
Chief Furry Officer’s Custom Photo Square Luggage Tag, I had to have it! This personalize luggage tag is unique and adorable! I travel often for work but unfortunately my pup, Buster, can’t always come along. The photo luggage tag makes me feel as if a small piece of Buster is with me while I’m away. Seeing his picture on my luggage is an instant reminder that my furry friend is waiting for me when I return home.

One of the cons of traveling for me is keeping track of my luggage. But now, with this custom pet tag, my bag stands out. This helps me to find my luggage easier at the baggage claim which is big help and stress reliever! All I have to do is look for Buster’s smiling face on my suitcase. During my trips, I’ve received so many compliments on this product. It’s been a conversation starter among many individuals I’ve met on my adventures away from home.

cfo has a large variety of gifts for people and this custom tag is definitely one of them! If your family member or friend enjoys to travel, then this truly makes a unique and special gift that he/she will adore. You simply can’t go wrong with this item, especially if you are a proud pet parent who is always on the go!

Odor control without filters or chemical sprays

CritterZone Air Purifier Review

Odor control without filters or chemical spraysI’m a proud owner of a cat and dog and love them dearly but sometimes their scent leaves a powerful odor throughout my home! This is especially true in the room with the litter box. It has been a constant battle to try and deal with these offensive smells! I love to host parties and get togethers with family and friends and it’s sometimes embarrassing with the lingering pet odors.

When I purchased the unit I could not believe how small it was! I loved how it can be easily moved from one room to the next. It has a powerful ability to purify, and literally cleans out the odors in any room (including the room with the litter box, which surprised me!). It purified my house very quickly and created a fresh scent. It’s almost as if you’re walking into a room with all the windows open – It’s fantastic and is such a drastic change!

The fact that there is no filter is a great perk too. There’s no need for me to search the market or try to find replacement filters. I love that I don’t have to spend extra money with this product. As far as I’m concerned, this is huge plus!

I give two thumbs up to the customer service at CritterZone as well. I called with a few questions regarding the product and the help I received was great! I’ve done some research on the company since I love this air purifier so much and I noticed they have discounts available too. Right now there’s a $10.00 off with the discount code: dontbecruel – definitely worth it with or without the code but if I were you I would jump on this deal!

It’s hard to believe that this little unit works so well, but it does! I’m so grateful for CritterZone because it’s resolved all of the pet odor problems in my home. It was definitely money well spent and I highly recommend!

American Authors Band

Q&A with American Authors

American Authors Band

Earlier this month, Brooklyn-based indie band, American Authors, released a dog version music video for their popular single, “Best Day of My Life.” The video features an English Bulldog Rescue named Meaty and it follows his daily routine as he enjoys the day. Don’t Be Cruel recently had the opportunity to talk to American Authors about music, rescue animals and pet adoption.

DBC: What inspired you to create a music video based on a rescue pet?
AA: We really enjoy working with NPO’s, charities, and anything where we can use our music to bring awareness to different issues. When we started talking about how cool it would be to center a video around a dog, we knew there was another level we could take the idea. Working with the rescue center not only tied the video together but made this something to be extra proud of.

DBC: How did you come to pick Meaty from the Georgia English Bulldog Rescue to be the star of your video?
AA: There are so many dogs and pets out there that I’m sure would have been just as fun to make a video with but Meaty seemed to have that special personality that can sometimes be tough to come across. It also helps that he’s one of the cutest English bull dogs we’ve ever seen!

DBC: What do you hope viewers will take away from watching this video?
AA: We hope viewers walk away from watching this video feeling good with a smile on their face. The majority of the dogs I had growing up were rescued and hopefully this video will inspire people to go out and continue to help out and rescue animals.

DBC: What do you think is the biggest challenge for local shelters & rescues to raise awareness about pet adoption?
AA: People seem to be very specific about the type of pet they are looking for so maybe they don’t think to adopt from a rescue shelter right off the bat. There are a lot of great animals for people to save and take care of.

DBC: Do you currently own any pets? Are any of them rescues?
AA: Our bass player, Dave, adopted a cat named froggy about 5 years ago. She’s a great cat and were still trying to figure out a way to take her on tour with us!

DBC: Do you travel with your pets often? Take them on tours/live shows?
AA: Right now we are touring in a 15 passenger van with very limited space so unfortunately froggy is at home with a couple friends who look after her. Hopefully as soon as we get more space we will be able to bring pets to shows!

DBC: Do you have any words of wisdom to share with the general public about pet rescue and adoption?
AA: Highly consider rescue centers and adopting when looking into owning pets. Not only is it great help and a wonderful thing to do but these animals are amazing and should not be overlooked because of their difficult past.

Check out their new music video, “Best Day of My Life.”

Dog in the meadow

Happy National Holistic Pet Day!

August 30th is National Holistic Pet Day. It was founded by Colleen Paige of the Animal Miracle Foundation and Network to “celebrate and promote all the things we do (or should do) to take care of our pets’ bodies, minds and souls.”

So what does “holistic” mean to you? Halo Pets surveyed nearly 850 pet owners about the term “holistic” as it relates to what they feed their pets. The survey respondents included both dog and cat owners who buy a variety of pet food brands. Some respondents are Halo customers, some are not. Nearly 62% of respondents consider the food they purchase for their pets to be a premium, “holistic” brand.

You may be surprised to learn that there are no official standards for using the term “holistic” in pet food marketing. But, according to their survey, most consumers agree on what they think those standards should be. An overwhelming majority of survey participants said the following were critical elements of a holistic pet food:

  • No artificial preservatives or colorings – 84.8%
  • All natural – 83.6%
  • No corn or fillers – 79.1%
  • No inferior by-products – 82.3%
  • No rendered animal parts, such as chicken meal – 78%
  • No “4D” meats (diseased, dying, disabled or dead before butchering) – 80.3%
  • Other top attributes included: Only fresh meat or fish (58.5%), includes lots of fruits and vegetables (50.3%), zero recalls (50.4%) and the use of ingredients one can find in their own kitchen (45.2%).

Patrick the Miracle Dog

Patrick the Miracle Dog’s Abuser Sentenced, Patrick Finds Forever Home

Kisha Curtis, 29, pleaded guilty last month to fourth-degree animal cruelty on the eve of her trial. She was charged in March 2011 after Patrick the Miracle Dog was found near death.

Although she won’t be serving any jail time, Curtis would be required to serve 18 months probation and forfeit her right to Patrick, who has not been in her care since he was found.

She’ll also be required to pay nearly $2,000 to the New Jersey ASPCA, which gave the pup emergency care before he was moved to a veterinary hospital in Tinton Falls.

On a happier note, NJSPCA posted the following on their Facebook page:

“Patrick Court Update : Will post information later BUT I would like everyone to know that Patrick is now PATRICK SCAVELLI, it is official the Scavelli’s were granted legal custody of Patrick. NJSPCA could not be happier with the outcome for Patrick and the Scavelli’s. Thank you all for your support. Capt Yocum”

Congratulations Patrick! May you be happy in your new forever home!

Calm Coat for dogs with anxiety

Calm Coat – A True Miracle!

Calm Coat for dogs with anxietyWhen I rescued Mollie from the shelter, I realized that she had a very unfortunate and horrible upbringing as a pup. She was a very sweet and gentle from day one of owning her; however it was obvious she suffered from anxiety and was easily stressed.

Mollie is nervous on a daily basis, like when an airplane goes by, the lawn guys are working on the yard, and thunderstorms are the WORST! She also gets very fearful when in the car. Almost anything can trigger her and at anytime. Her attacks of panting, barking, crying, shaking and pacing back and forth was heartbreaking for me to watch. I knew I had to do something!

After much research, I discovered the Calm Coat. At first I was skeptical of this product because I assumed the shirt would make Mollie more anxious or scared. But I decided to give it a shot. In my opinion, this would be a way better solution than using the ‘doggy drugs’ or pet medications.

When I received the Calm Coat, I did a few warm-up activities by placing treats on the shirt so Mollie would become familiar with it. I was very surprised because shortly after the treat introduction, Mollie allowed me to put the shirt on with a breeze. She was instantly comfortable in it, strutting around the house as if she was in a runway show modeling it off! (I love the material!) I found that it’s not necessary to wrap the dog tightly, just comfortably so that the dog has a greater sense of self!

Now when Mollie sees the shirt she comes running to me to put it on her. But best of all, it has decreased her anxiety significantly! I use the Calm Coat almost daily; when we go for walks, play outside, in the car and of course during storms. It’s been a miracle! Mollie doesn’t panic nearly as much as she used to. I feel she senses security in the shirt which leaves me to believe the hugging technique works! I’m amazed by the Calm Coat and I highly recommend for dogs who suffer from anxiety. It seemed to have cured 5 years for me and Mollie so it could be a great solution for you and your dog too!
